Former governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, has appealed to the 36 state governors to take a stand and support the recognition of a state police in the country.
Jang, who spoke over the weekend in Takum, Taraba State, during the installation of the Chief of Takum, HRH Sopiya Gboshi, also charged ethnic nationalities across the Middle Belt to be united.
He said, “Permit me to call upon our people in the Middle Belt and to say we need peace in our region. And to have peace in the Middle Belt, we must be a united people irrespective of our tribes and states because we are one people.
“When we unite, we will be able to protect this God-given land and the Middle Belt.
“Besides, you cannot have security in a place where the people manning it do not know the area.
“So, I plead with the present set of governors that they should take a stand and request that the Constitution of Nigeria be amended for state police to be created for the good security of our people.”
The governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, who also spoke, said Taraba is supposed to be the food basket of West Africa.
He noted that with the arable land and water bodies littered across the state, the feat can be achieved if the people of the state work with the government.
He particularly applauded the governor of Taraba State for resolving the age-long chieftaincy dispute that has left Takum without a traditional ruler for years.
On his part, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (Rtd), who is also a son of the soil, said he is planning to partner with Germans to open a vocational institute to train youths in Takum to become employable.
He said the world has changed, and he is keen on making the next generation not just degree holders but those with the right skills to become employable and employers of labor.
Also, former governor of Taraba State, Jolly Nyame, appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas to ensure other ethnicities across the state yearning for traditional stools are considered.
Governor Agbu Kefas, who also spoke, said his administration will continue to ensure peace and progress thrive across all communities in the state.
He urged everyone to come together and work for the prosperity of the state.
The newly installed chief, HRH Sopiya Gboshi, urged all and sundry in Takum to forget their differences and join hands with him to unite and build the town.
