Kano Mosque Attack: Death toll of worshippers hits 15


Death toll of worshippers from Wednesday’s arson attack launched by a 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar on a mosque at Gezawa area of Kano State has risen to 15.

The spokesperson of Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, on Friday, confirmed this to newsmen in the state.

SP Haruna said the death has risen from 11 to 15.

The death toll rises after more victims from the incident who were hospitalized continued to pass away.

Recall that Abubakar, who was angry following prolong family disagreement over sharing of inheritance had allegedly sprayed the mosque area with petrol, locked the door, and set the mosque on fire while the worshippers were praying, trapping over 30 of the worshippers inside the mosque.

Meanwhile, the Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, in his effort to alleviate the predicament of the victims  has donated ₦3 million to support their medication.

He made the donation during a visit to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, where the injured victims are receiving treatment.

He said, “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

“Gaya Emirate will provide all the necessary support to ensure a full and speedy recovery for those who were injured.”

The Emir however expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and offered words of comfort and support to those recovering from their injuries.

According to him, the visit served as a gesture of solidarity and compassion for the affected community.

He therefore emphasized the importance of unity and urged residents to continue offering aid and assistance to those in need.

On his part, Gezawa Local Government Caretaker Chairman, Alhaji Muhammad Bashir Tanko, said that the local council will begin immediate renovations of the damaged mosque.
