Murder of Anambra Vigilante: Police order manhunt, intercept 4 ESN militia

The Amambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam has ordered an immediate manhunt operation for the armed men who murdered the commander of the local vigilante in Nnewi on Monday.

The CP, who said the gunmen engaged security operatives in a gun battle at Nnobi, vowed to get justice for the murdered vigilante operative and others who were victims of the attack.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga recalled that during the gun duel, the vigilante operative was killed, while two other passersby were fatally injured due to indiscriminate shootings by the hoodlums in an attempt to escape the scene.

According to Ikenga, the Police Responding Team at the scene recovered the bodies of the victims and took them to the hospital, regretting that three of the victims, including a 22-year-old lady, were later confirmed dead by the doctors on duty, while two others are currently receiving treatment.

Ikenga said the CP, while condemning the action, described the killers as ‘cowards who have murdered sleep’.

He called on members of the public, especially the eyewitnesses, to assist the police with information on the ongoing onslaught operation.

In another development, the command said that the police-led Joint Security Force in Aguata area of the state has intercepted four suspected Eastern Security Network, ESN, militia in Ufuma, Orumba North.

According to the command, their arrest followed information received over time of planned attacks on security agents and innocent citizens by the dreaded group.

The state police spokesman said that among the four suspects arrested was one Maduabuchi Nwafor (32 years), who is a native of Ufuma.

The PPRO said: “He has been identified as one of the native doctors who prepares criminal charms for the group and uses his shrine for initiation ceremonies and meeting points for the criminals.

“Also, one of the suspects, who is already assisting the police with information, confessed to being one of the gunmen dispatched by the group to enforce illegal sit-at-home on May 30th, 2024.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered an investigation to be widened and deepened to identify hideouts of the insurgents seeking to destabilize and truncate development in the state.

“He assures Anambra people that the Police command under his watch will continue to serve the people selflessly and will jealously protect the sources of information to protect informers from harm.”
