FACTIONAL council officials have turned Yola North Local Government Area secretariat, Adamawa State, to a theatre of war.
Embattled Chairman of the council, Alhaji Mahmud Abba, is leading one faction, while the Vice Chairman, Mr. George Raphael, leads the other.
Their feud has been lingering for some time, but the situation assumed another dimension when their respective supporters clashed in the secretariat for two consecutive days. Already, the gates of the secretariat have been under lock, with heavily-armed anti-riot police detachment keeping vigil.
Vanguard learned that the Vice Chairman, Mr. George Raphael, and his group were allowed entry into the secretariat on Wednesday, when the monthly allocation was to be attended to. Sensing what was happening, the Chairman, Mahmud Abba’s faction stormed the secretariat yesterday morning, clashing with the Police as they attempted to force their way into the secretariat.
The policemen responded, firing tear-gas.
Contacted on phone, Mr. Raphael confirmed sharing the local government allocation for July, amounting to N48 million, challenging anybody not comfortable with his explanation to report him to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and that he had the mandate of Governor Mohammed Jibrilla to dispense the allocation.
The state Police Command confirmed the development, describing it as unfortunate. Spokesman of the Command, Superin-tendent Abubakar Othman, said the Command had completely taken over the Yola North secretariat and warned the warring factions to sheathe their swords.
