ASUU condemns ethnic jingoists, warlords

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned ethnic jingoists and warlords fanning embers of disunity in the country, saying they are not interested in the welfare of Nigerians.

Former ASUU President, Dr Dipo Fashina who called on Nigerians to fight for their rights, urged Nigerians not to join them because “they do not have their interests at heart.”

According to him, they all contributed to destruction of the country.

Fashina who is the national convener of the ASUU Leadership Training Workshops tagged “Towards a principled and Ideological Unionism” held at the University of Ibadan (UI) maintained that while others were drumming wars of disintegration and fanning embers of disunity, it is interested in championing the cause of ordinary Nigerians who are suffering from the current anti-masses policies of the present government.

Represented by the Coordinator, UI b ranch Training workshop, and Chairman of ASUU University of Lagos, Dr Adelaja Odukoya, Fashina said ASUU will continue to be on the side of the oppressed, the weak and total liberation of Nigeria and Nigerians.

While noting that it becomes important for ASUU to train new crop of leaders in the ideals of the Union to facilitate emergence of new generation of activists that can fight for the masses, Fashina lamented that it is a tragedy that the gains of the struggle for independence which caused a lot of sacrifice and bloodshed to achieve in 1960 have today been completely eroded and set aside.

The leadership training workshop which trained about 100 academic staff selected across the faculties in the premier university was executed by labour activists such as Abiodun Aremu, Owei Lakemfa, Professor Tajudeen Akanju and former ASUU national treasurer, Dr Ademola Aremu.

In his welcome address, chairman, UI Chapter of ASUU, Dr Deji Omole stated that the training was geared towards building a virile union and nation, adding that ASUU is committed towards full liberation of weak Nigerians.

He noted that successive governments have failed Nigerians in improving their life chances with a selfish political class who are self-centered.
